Turkey, the losers
Jul. 16th, 2016 09:29 pmI feel so sorry for the solders on the ground, they are going to go through hell now, their lives as they knew them are over. And this has nothing to do with taking sides.
My dad always taught me not to hit someone who is already on the ground.

Turkey, wow.
Jul. 15th, 2016 11:40 pmEveryone is clued to their TVs here trying to understand what is going in Turkey. Romanian TV reports that a coup is going on there.
BBC started getting more details (still nothing on CNN):
Turkey's PM has denounced an "illegal action" by a military "group", with bridges closed in Istanbul and aircraft flying low over the capital, Ankara.
Binali Yildirim said the military action was not authorised but it was not a coup. He said that the government remained in charge.
Traffic has been stopped from crossing both the Bosphorus and Fatih Sultan Mehmet bridges in Istanbul.
There are also reports of gunshots in the capital Ankara.
Mr Yildirim told NTV television by telephone: "We are working on the possibility of an attempt. We will not allow this attempt." He did not elaborate.
"Those who are in this illegal act will pay the highest price," he added, saying it would not be correct to describe the move as a "coup".
Wow.

Bundestag voted to recognize the Armenian genocide. Turkey is furious, recalled its ambassador from Berlin and further threatened to "do whatever is necessary to resolve this issue".
The pro-Armenian sentiment here in Moldova, where I am working on a charity project at the moment seems to be very strong. I kept hearing about it all day today from almost everyone I talked to.
Here is an Armenian church in Isfahan, Iran. I like how they merged Islamic ornament and Christian iconography and how visually overwhelming it is.

This photo is from the internet, it is not mine.

Eastern Orthodox Easter
Apr. 30th, 2016 04:04 pmWe landed in Moldova. The guys we became friends with when we visited last year invited us to come over for Easter. We are going to a monastery some fifty miles away from the capital. It is going to be an all-nighter with a huge feast tomorrow after many days of Lent.
It is becoming a tradition for us to go somewhere for Eastern Orthodox Easter. Last year we were at Ecumenical Patriarchate of Constantinople in Istanbul. Here is a photo I took there last year.
