Today was a fast day in the village, nothing except bread, vegetables and fruit was allowed (not even olive oil). We worked at the far edge of the forest and the kids brought us lunch there, which was well, bread, vegetables and fruit. Nobody in the village cooked anything else today.

In the evening however I had to drive to the nearby town to meet someone and I grabbed a quick dinner at a diner there. It is a very simple, no frills place but it is the most expensive diner in town.

I had this Greek salad:

And this chicken schnitzel with mash:

It was very good. I am definitely not a foodie though and can enjoy most of edible stuff.

The bill was around GBP 2.50 (Euro 3.10, USD 3.40, CAD 4.30).

Moldova is the poorest and cheapest country in Europe and London where you and I live is among the most expensive places in Europe.

London is pretty insane. But its usually reflected in the sallary.

Yes, and on average people in London are better off then people here, ie can afford more.

Wow that's pretty cheap for all that.  For something like that here it would cost about 20.00 in a restaurant.  Without the tax.  So roughly 22.00 cdn with tax.  Not including drinks.

That's supposed to be a poor man's meal there?

Here it's KD and Ketchup.   Or Ramen noodles.

I prefer KD and Ketchup though..Sometimes I'll put hot dog weiners in it.  Gotta have variety.

They do not like the prepackaged food, especially instant noodles, etc. They cook a lot from scratch here and it works out pretty cheap. They grow most of the stuff they cook with themselves.

Nothing like fresh fruit and vegetables.  Wish I had the time, space, and energy to grow my own produce.  Sometimes I can get local produce at the market cheap.  Grocery store produce is insanely expensive mostly because they get it shipped over from the US or elsewhere.

Oh yes I've been watching the news on the LNG thing here.  Been cheering on the native Canadians.  We have issues with the oil companies here.  I'm not a fan of the oil companies here.  They need to start listening to the Natives they know the land better then anyone..They know first hand what the effects of the pipelines are on the land.

I see from that article that many scientists are actually joining the natives and are opposing LNG.

Yes David Sazuki being one of the scientists backing the natives.  I have always liked David.  Used to watch his nature of things show when I was a child.

I loved watching stuff like that..nature and science shows.

They cook awesome soups here. I like their food actually. It took a bit to adjust but I am a fan now.

I do love soup.  Especially on a cold winter day.

Nothing like a creamy tomatoe soup and grilled cheese sandwich for lunch.

Their soups are chunky chicken and vegetables and home made noodles. I have to make a post about their soups actually they have so many different varieties but they are all chunky.

... and 1800 costarican colones. Cheap!

But what shall I do with this hunger attack after seeing your photos? Afraid, need to call my servants and ask them to bring some oysters and champagne...

Yes, oysters and champagne are the best for hunger attacks.
There are no oysters here but there is a lot of champagne, they make a lot of it (well sparkling wine) here.

I hate champagne, but must drink it for status reasons. The pillar of society, all that stuff, you know...

From: [identity profile] topum.livejournal.com
You are making me feel lucky that I do not move in the circles where status is that important, well not the one that can be earned by drinking champagne anyway.

From: [identity profile] diejacobsleiter.livejournal.com
Well, it was a joke, of course. There is nothing more incompatible than me and those "status" people.

It's heavily raining outside, and an endless piece of work today, and so my jokes taste rather vinegar than wine, I suppose...

Prague is quite a bit more expensive than Moldova these days. But yeah, still very cheap. One of the good things about living in London is that wherever you go everything looks damn cheap.

Pretty much the same as living anywhere I have lived. Our pints in Prague were under $2!!! They're more around $8 in Toronto...
