Huh, I wonder if that was written before or after the MASH plotline where the mechanic was sending Jeep pieces home one at a time with the intent of making a complete Jeep when he got home. I'll do some reading.

I haven't finished tracking this down but the episode aired in 1973, and Cash recorded "one piece at a time" in 1976. However, someone else wrote the song earlier.

I can't find a date for when the song was written, but it was apparently written for Cash, rather than him covering an earlier song, so I think MASH has precedence.
