It's the same here for most Christians...Or in my limited experience it seems that way. I was babtized and confirmed Catholic. Didn't stay Catholic my own choice. But I do remember Masses being said for general things..Actually more often then not masses were offered for the dead.
I was told a story how one girl from our village fell for a guy who was visiting from western Ukraine but hey could not marry because he was Catholic (western Ukraine is Catholic while Eastern is Orthodox) and she was Orthodox. Neither of them would convert. Orthodox priest would not marry them because he was Catholic. Catholic priest would only marry them if they promised to raise their kids Catholic, which she refused to do. They ended up breaking up in the end.
