Black caviar under the black sky
May. 29th, 2016 01:09 pmYesterday we visited Tiraspol, the capital of Transnistria. Last year we managed to visit just one village there right at the border with Moldova but yesterday we made it to the capital. We were impressed by the sky over the city. Note what is advertised on the right. Yes, it is caviar. Transnistria is the poorest break away region teetering on the edge of insolvency of the poorest country in Europe.

Or is caviar cheap there?

Date: 2016-05-29 07:44 pm (UTC)They hardly have any tourists there. Caviar is cheaper there than anywhere I have seen it, yes. They are very close with Russia (a major producer) plus I think they farm it there themselves too. Also, the poverty is not as bad there as it looks on paper I think because most of the economy is black and unaccounted for in the official numbers. I saw more top range Land Rovers there than I see on an average day in London.
