Best of luck to the president-elect Donald Trump

What a night. I have to say that watching democracy at work is exhilarating. And nobody does it quite like the Americans.

I cannot imagine voting for Trump (same goes for Clinton actually) and I predicted a different outcome (I also got it wrong with Brexit) but now that "we the people" have spoken, I wish the best of luck to the president-elect Donald Trump in rising to the challenges of the world's no 1 job and hope that he will do great (and prove me wrong again).

Congrats to my friends who supported Trump, I can imagine how justifiably intoxicated you are with this victory. And I hope that the understandable but still very ott hysterics of many Hillary supporters will subside in a couple of days or weeks and they will not double down on calling everyone racists and -phobes (I think that was one of the things that brought you Trump) and the US, awesome as it is, will move on to what it does best, business as usual (and providing entertainment for the rest of us every now and then).

Things such as this are dismaying to me personally: http://www.eenews.net/stories/1060043378 but if his administration is awful, then hopefully there'll be another change in four years.

Unless the Democrat nominee is going to be Chelsea Clinton this time ).

[identity profile] topum.livejournal.com 2016-11-09 10:32 pm (UTC)(link)
Well there is at least something we agree on ).

I didn't notice many disagreements between us. And we agreed about the beer. This is what really matters.

"...and they will not double down on calling everyone racists and -phobes (I think that was one of the things that brought you Trump)"

I think you're right. I just saw this on facebook:

"When all the non-racist, non-misogynist, non-homophobic, non-bigoted, everyday ordinary people get so sick of you calling them racists, misogynists, homophobes, and bigots that they go out and vote against your candidate, do you:

A. Reevaluate your personal conduct and strategy of convincing people to share your politics?

Or

B. Call them racists, misogynists, homophobes, and bigots and yell at them even more?

According to most of my timeline, you chose B. And that's exactly why your candidate lost."

There has been quite a bit of this feeling that some people are just evil and do not deserve convincing or talking to only shamed and shut up. Such stuff never ends well especially when roughly half of the country qualifies for that treatment. There are many people on LJ who unfriend anyone who posts something against their views (always puzzled me, is it supposed to be punishment? I don't think anyone feels punished though) but in real life you cannot just exclude people from your world because of their views.

In my family that voted for Trump, they are racists. I know this for a fact. I'm not a racist. I may have said ignorant things in the past, but I regret them and I'm trying to expand my knowledge and not be close-minded. I want to know way more about politics before the next election.

But yes.. I truly hope he does better than anticipated for someone who has no political background...

[identity profile] topum.livejournal.com 2016-11-09 10:45 pm (UTC)(link)
I am sorry to hear that some people in your family are racists and hope that they will regret it in the future (perhaps even with your help) like you regret the ignorant things from your past.

[identity profile] ascending-fire.livejournal.com 2016-11-09 11:19 pm (UTC)(link)
I hope so, too ... I was just more about how long someone's family has lived in the u.s. as opposed to recent immigrants, I was never outright racist like my family members.. I've dated outside my race many times.. but I'm engaged to within my race now.

I feel really bad when my step dad acts racist, and his daughter.

People crashed the Canadian immigration site today.

I think that Trump will be a disaster for America.

I think the site crash is hysterics that will pass.
I also don't think it will be a disaster for America, it survived W, it will survive Trump.

[identity profile] bluemeanybeany.livejournal.com 2016-11-09 10:28 pm (UTC)(link)
some other countries didn't survive W though.

[identity profile] topum.livejournal.com 2016-11-09 10:32 pm (UTC)(link)
Some didn't survive Obama too.

[identity profile] beautesauvage13.livejournal.com 2016-11-09 10:50 pm (UTC)(link)

4yrs he's got 4yrs. They survived Nixon too.

I find it funny you know how at the end of his campaign when it looked like Hilary was going to win he kept crying that the election was rigged.  Yet here he is President of the USA.

Boy, the campaign was ugly.
It might be 8 years if the Democrats continue to nominate like they did this year. I hope it won't be Chelsea Clinton this time.

[identity profile] beautesauvage13.livejournal.com 2016-11-09 11:02 pm (UTC)(link)

God I hope Trump isn't there for 2 terms.

The Dems need to get away from the Clintons.

Yes and it survived Obama and Slick Willie as well.As for me,I'm a libertarian. My guy was Gary Johnson .Neither Clinton or Trump and their parties represent my beliefs or my hopes for America.I'm glad Trump won only because I dis liked Clinton more but now that he is going to be our new president I'm willing to give him a chance which is more than we will ever see from democrats and the same could be said for republicans if Clinton had won. Both these parties are corrupt and owned by corrupt corporate interests that do not have my interests or the interests of the average American in their minds. They only care about their greedy agenda of empire

[identity profile] beautesauvage13.livejournal.com 2016-11-10 01:26 am (UTC)(link)

And now there are anti-trump protests in several cities.  I'm sitting here watching it on TV news anchors arguing about it.  This is on Trump he created this nightmare we're living in.  With all his hate speech and bullying in the campaign.  It's not over.

Athena

[identity profile] topum.livejournal.com 2016-11-10 01:43 am (UTC)(link)
Nah, the election is over, this is just people letting off some steam. Do not quite get what they protest for (overturn the election and do what they want instead?). No, Trump is many bad things but he is not alone responsible for all the hate around us.

[identity profile] beautesauvage13.livejournal.com 2016-11-10 02:31 am (UTC)(link)

Hopefully.  I doubt it though.  People are afraid and he added to that fear with all his threats throughout his campaign.

[identity profile] topum.livejournal.com 2016-11-10 02:54 am (UTC)(link)
People get scared, protests happen, riots happen. There were BLM riots not long ago. Not that unusual. I do not get what they seek to achieve though, overturn the election? People who voted Democrats did not bother to go and vote for Hillary this time around. You can stand in the street with "No to bad stuff! Yes to good stuff!" poster but am not sure what does that achieve.

[identity profile] beautesauvage13.livejournal.com 2016-11-10 03:03 am (UTC)(link)

I don't know what it'll achieve either.  I see no use in protesting now.  Trump won the Electoral vote.  The people have spoken and they voted Trump.  So you know they ought to just suck it up and deal or move to Canada.  I don't like that he is president and he'll probably flush America and democracy down the toilet while he's there but it's done and can't be undone for 4 yrs.  So I don't know.   Unless some crazy decides to assassinate him we're pretty much stuck with the guy.

Athena

[identity profile] topum.livejournal.com 2016-11-10 03:12 am (UTC)(link)
If they just need to feel heard and let some steam off, it is OK, it will not change what they want to change now though, the work to flush him out in 4 years should start instead.
I hope nobody gets assassinated, but even if he was they would be stuck with Pence then anyway.

[identity profile] beautesauvage13.livejournal.com 2016-11-10 03:49 am (UTC)(link)

Yes they should be working on building a better opposition to Trump in the next election.  They should also be working toward uniting the country again.  Trump is horrible but if the country unites again they can bitch slap Trump into being the leader they need for the 4yrs.

Thank you, sir-or-madam. I had various doubts about Trump, but I also had CERTAINTIES about Clinton which made me NOT want her as President. However most of my friends supported her and I'm encouraged to see that Trump has been gracious in victory, and also that most left-wing media outlets have said that they won't try to deny the legitimacy of his win. So, things aren't quite as ugly as we feared they'd be. Hope it works out okay for all of us.

I had certainties about both Clinton and Trump and would not be able to vote for either of them.
Yeah, I don't think it is the end of the world that some people seem to think it is.

[identity profile] riverwynne.livejournal.com 2016-11-10 12:32 am (UTC)(link)
It sucks, but it also may be the kick in the seat of the pants that we need. Maybe this will force people the be accountable and use their voices.

I didn't vote for Trump.

"Business as usual" is what I hoped we could avoid this time 'round. Alas, Bernie never stood a chance against the machine.

Great post. Thank you for this.
