These two natural color images from NASA's Cassini spacecraft show the changing appearance of Saturn's north polar region between 2012 and 2016.

Scientists are investigating potential causes for the change in color of the region inside the north-polar hexagon on Saturn. The color change is thought to be an effect of Saturn's seasons. In particular, the change from a bluish color to a more golden hue may be due to the increased production of photochemical hazes in the atmosphere as the north pole approaches summer solstice in May 2017.

Researchers think the hexagon, which is a six-sided jetstream, might act as a barrier that prevents haze particles produced outside it from entering. During the polar winter night between November 1995 and August 2009, Saturn's north polar atmosphere became clear of aerosols produced by photochemical reactions -- reactions involving sunlight and the atmosphere. Since the planet experienced equinox in August 2009, the polar atmosphere has been basking in continuous sunshine, and aerosols are being produced inside of the hexagon, around the north pole, making the polar atmosphere appear hazy today.

Other effects, including changes in atmospheric circulation, could also be playing a role. Scientists think seasonally shifting patterns of solar heating probably influence the winds in the polar regions.

Interesting.  Maybe the aliens are not using clean fuels for their space ships on Saturn.  Or it's just a natural thing for Saturn.  I mean it's too far away to really know.

Or maybe they messed up the planet so much that their global warming continues even now millions of years after their civilisation is gone.

Also a possibility.  Maybe that's why the aliens keep coming to earth.  Looking for a new home to colonize.

Interesting, thank you.

The world is becoming a hot place to live. In several years, your new house may find itself amid a desert, with moldovan bedouins passing by on camels. And no more wine, man, imagine that?

Because I intend to keep living in Chelsea / Knightsbridge and spend maybe a couple of weeks a year only in that house, desert / camels / bedouins sounds like fun for those couple of weeks ).

But two weeks without wine?! Accept my deepest condolences.

I suspect that it will take much more than desertification to keep Moldovans from producing alcohol.
They are proudly occupying number one spot in the ranking of nations by alcohol consumption per head.

I hope so. And your head counts too, I suppose. It´s just a bit difficult to make wine in deserts. (Unless it's from camel's urina...)

Yes, I think my head is what keeping them in that spot safe and secure.

I was just telling someone the other day that if people don't believe in global warming than they are just ignorant. We had 80 degree days in Michigan in October.. one of our lakes reached a new high level of temp this month on record. How can people deny it? But to see it from this angle is interesting also :)

I hope ours will not get bad enough to turn us into Saturn.

Well me too lol I just meant people in general who try to say global warming isn't real. Maybe in million years we'll be like Saturn lol

I think if people are trying to say that global isn't real they should be able to do that as long as they are providing the evidence to support their point of view, etc. A healthy debate is always a good thing. I certainly am not going to tell them that they are ignorant because so am I on global warming and if they start talking evidence I will not be able to respond and it will become ugly. I am ignorant and chose to side with those who say it is real. They are ignorant (or not) and chose to side with the other side (yes, that other side does look less reasonable to me but I cannot substantiate it, I am too lazy to really read up on it :)). So I do not see how I can call them ignorant in this case even though I side with the other side :).

I was really just referring to how overly religious people in the past used to say global warming isn't real because they didn't want to admit evolution is real. Everyone's entitled to their own opinion, but I'm more of the mind that even though I have faith, I also believe in science and concrete facts.

Oh I thought you meant people who claim it is not real / not our fault not from a religious point of view and claim to rely on science as well. There are those, I met quite a lot of them. I cannot argue with those or call them ignorant (I wish I could though, haha but am to lazy to read up on it) even though I side with the other side and what seems to be current scientific consensus.

I haven't met anyone personally who thinks global warming isn't real because of a religious point of view AND believes in science stuff, like carbon dating saying the earth is millions of years older than the Bible says it is, sort of thing.. I've just seen them on tv. Sorry. I shouldn't say anyone's ignorant, that's kind of rude, I guess, I'm just a very open minded person so it's hard for me to identify with very close minded people, and if people nowadays with all the new scientific data available are going to say global warming isn't real, then I would consider them close-minded. Maybe that's a nicer way to put it lol

I meant non-religious people who think that global warming isn't real. I met those. Cannot say they are close-minded because if they start talking substance I won't be able to support the conversation an it will become obvious that I adopted my point of view blindly accepting the dominant point of view (and historically those have been wrong too) and calling them close-minded based on just that would be quite...close-minded, haha. I don't even know the basics about what the evidence is, what the current debate is, what are the alternative views, what are they based on, etc and would not risk calling anyone even ignorant or close-minded based on that. It might be different for you though, you might know way more than I do about this (which would be super easy). I wish I did know enough to be able to argue with them and call them names though but for that I would have to read up on this and I do not find it interesting enough unfortunately.

Feel bad about calling anyone "names". Sorry.

I did not mean to make you feel bad, sorry! ) I was just sharing my view which is based on my circumstances. There are plenty of people who know enough to call those guys ignorant and closed-minded probably and you could be one of them. I was just saying that even though I side with the view opposite from theirs, I still cannot challenge them in any way (not only by calling them names but that too) because I myself know nothing about it and just side with the dominant view blindly ).

oh I get what you were saying.. and I'm not an expert by any means, it's all okay, I just think I should have phrased my initial comment differently :)

From: [identity profile] topum.livejournal.com
Well, I am ashamed to admit that I actually do call people names ). Would not do it here simply because they are likely to know way more than I do about this and will end up having more basis to call me worse names than I called them, ha ha.
