I grew up in a village in northern Germany. There the farmers put big wooden wagon wheels on top of their chimneys to entice storks to nest there. Having a stork nest on your farmhouse brings good luck, according to local lore.
Same here and especially in the neighbouring Romania. Some villages in Transylvania have two layers of life going on: on the ground people's houses and cars and horse driven carts and above all of that stork nests, one next to almost each house and they are flying in and out of their nests all the time. Life and movement is going on the ground and above ground all the time. It is beautiful to watch how storks and people live together in such big numbers there.
Not really. The village looks very cute on the outside but the gossip was terrible. You couldn't turn around without everybody knowing about it. There are some things I miss about Europe but overall I'm much happier here.
