Mugurel, our hosts' male cat brought a little kitten from somewhere. He carries the kitten around the garden, licks him, brings him food and sleeps next to him as if he is the kitten's mother.

Mugurel is a fierce fighter, a prolific lover and never lets people touch him. The kitten also does not let humans approach him but seems really attached to Mugurel. Wherever the kitten goes Mugurel follows him. The kitten is very skinny but eats well.

I don't have any experience with cats, especially the ones that roam free. Is it something that happens every now and then? Our hosts have never seen something like this before.

From searching around online, I have now read of other experiences with male cats adopting kittens occasionally.

Is Mugurel a domesticated house cat?  It is not at all unusual for a house cat/pet to adapt human like behaviors.  If Mugurel is Feral then this is unusual..Not ever heard of feral males adopting kittens.  Usually Males in the wild will eat the kittens.

Someone to check out on youtube though is Jackson Galaxy.  He knows alot about cats.  He does this show on TV called "my cat from hell".  He travels around helping people with their cats when the cat is displaying undisirable behavior he steps in and shows people how to retrain the cat.  His youtube channel is very informative.

He is not feral but not fully domesticated either. He roams free but he comes to eat every day and he sleeps in the garden in summer and in a heated shed in winter. He knows that this is his home and would defend it from other male cats but he won't be petted although he can sit really close to us.

Ah so he's an indoor/outdoor cat.  Maybe the kitten is one of his offspring or he thinks it is.

Cats are puzzling sometimes.  Mine has taken to carrying around and playing with empty candy wrappers.  He'll literally ask me in his cat way for them.

It's hilarious.  He'll carry them around place them in the spot he wants and then pounce on it.

Mostly outdoor. He would never be in the same room with people (that shed is only for the cats). Also our hosts never actually got him anywhere, he just showed up as a young cat, they fed him a couple of times and he stayed.

Yes, they are fun. We have been laughing at Mugurel and his adopted baby all day.

I belong to the cat-loving half of hamanity (and not the dog-loving one). As far as I know, cats have a remarkably wide variety of patterns of behaviour. There are "egoists" and "caring hearts", "lonely wolves" and "family types" (cooking yorkshire pudding every Sunday). I knew one old homeless cat, with scars and a limp; late evenings, he always walked along the same route with his wife and children... And there is an infinite variety of bizarre habits and fancies... So no, I am not surprised that this guy decided to adopt a child.

Thank you. I think the stories online are mostly about cats adopting kittens that are already around them? This one found the kitten somewhere and brought it by the neck to where he lives. Now he is constantly next to him, follows him everywhere. It is really funny to watch.

The cats here roam free and are very independent. They are very interesting to watch.

"and are very independent"

By the way, this is the touchstone of subdivision the humanity into cat-lovers and dog-lovers. Cat-lovers like independent creatures, while dog-lovers prefer obedience and loyalty. Cat-lovers are mostly introverts respecting others' introversion (cats are introverts too), dog-lovers are extraverts, controllers and and apreciation seekers. Etc. etc.

My experience of cats tells me that cats like to do things that will cause the local humans to look at them in bafflement and disbelief.

That is also why they like to stare randomly at the ceiling as if they could see eldritch Things emerging from another dimension, and why they do so much typing on your keyboard at dead of night.

I wonder what new strangeness the kitten will come up with when he is grownup.

Well, if it's not a rare species of cats, then at least she has a cat's soul. O was a cat in her previous life. Because this is definitely a cat's manner of enjoying the sun....

The kitten seems to be very happy. He eats and plays all day but still does not let people approach him but half of the cats here never do.
