I've no idea.  I heard he was a spy for the English.  He was also heavy into the Occult and claimed he could invoke angels and demons.  He also loved that people thought he was Wicked used their vision or fear of him as a sort of selling point for himself. In all reality I think he was just a nerd who read alot of books and wrote alot of books and maybe he was some genius at cracking codes.  Also he possibly did various illicit drugs and had sex orgies from time to time.  Sex being a powerful energy to harness.  I do not think he ever completely crossed to the dark side as he to my knowledge never killed anyone.  Blood sacrifice I heard gives the black magician extreme power.  I'm sure he had knowledge of that but whether he actually did it who knows?  I think he reveled in having and creating a sort of bad reputation.  He often would not deny the things people accused him of since it made him famous.  Good or bad attention is still attention and press is press.   If people thinking he was this wicked evil person made him money and earn him fame then he would wear the devil mask in public.

Wouldn't people who talk with angels care very little about money or reputation? But what I see is often quite the opposite indeed. That always makes me doubt they really invoke anyone. Or anyone worth invoking ).
