Terraced gardens

The pier and the terraced gardens of Simonopetra Monastery from its balcony.

Mount Athos, Greece.

This angle gives me vertigo!

THIRDED. i mean...wow, that view, but seriously, even being firmly planted on my couch many thousands of miles away was too close to that edge. :D

That place is awesome built on a rock (modern engineers are still not sure how they managed to do that) with all those wrap around balconies around buildings with the most spectacular view. Some people refuse to set foot on those balconies though.

[identity profile] topum.livejournal.com 2016-12-15 11:32 pm (UTC)(link)
You have to see the real thing. Some people cannot set foot on that balcony.

Me too!

[identity profile] topum.livejournal.com 2016-12-15 11:32 pm (UTC)(link)
Some people cannot walk on that balcony at all.

[identity profile] tigerweave.livejournal.com 2016-12-15 01:14 pm (UTC)(link)
It looks like it has been turned on its side but then maybe it hasn't and the coastline really is that weirdly awesome?

[identity profile] dieastra.livejournal.com 2016-12-15 10:39 pm (UTC)(link)
I agree, it's actually not so bad when looking from the side and then up.
But the other angle makes it more interesting!

[identity profile] topum.livejournal.com 2016-12-15 11:35 pm (UTC)(link)
It is not on its side but a bit turned diagonally I think.

Here is what the monastery and the coastline look like:

I think I can understand why some people might not put foot on those balconies. Unreal. Just amazing...

[identity profile] topum.livejournal.com 2016-12-16 05:02 pm (UTC)(link)
And you can see through the floor (between the floorboards) there as well. And the floor is squeaky too.

O_O
eeek!

I'm not frightened of heights but that might do me in!

You were ok with it? or was it like you quickly ducked out onto the veranda, took a look, took a photo and retreated to a more safe-feeling place?

[identity profile] topum.livejournal.com 2016-12-17 02:54 pm (UTC)(link)
I was OK with it, I am not a great fan of safe spaces in general and try to expose myself to new, confusing and scary places and experiences (and especially people I disagree with a lot).

But some guys, who had fear of heights were very worried. And they did not have to hide it and pretend that they were OK because there were no girls around ), women are not allowed to set foot on Mount Athos at all (so it is kind of a safe space for boys in that respect :)).

I actually don't have a problem with see through floors or anything up high as long as there is a fence in front of me. I don't like to stand on rocks without a railing though. I always am afraid someone from behind may push me over.

Escher's space, with no up and down.

One of your best photos, imho.

[identity profile] topum.livejournal.com 2016-12-15 11:35 pm (UTC)(link)
Thanks man. That place is awesome.
