Our neighbours' daughters made these traditional curtains for our hosts' veranda. These curtains are very popular here.

You mean, they are handmade? Brilliant work.

Yes, I think they are handmade.

Looks like it, yes.

In Russia, there are some Northern regions (e.g. Vologda) with highly sophisticated and virtuoso art of lacework.

This is on a different level I think. And this is also different from those curtains. I think this is called needle lace and the curtains are cutwork. Although I have to say that I know very little about it.

They also have more sophisticated stuff here but this naive cutwork seems to be most popular for everyday use in the houses.

What is on your photo is beautiful. Don't look naive to me. And I suppose there is a combination of cut and needle lace.

When I've been to Vologda, I saw this virtuoso work everywhere - tablecloths, napkins, handkerchiefs, elements of clothes, whatever you can imagine. So it is not something exclusive, it's a part of everyday life there. And you could buy it there in special shops for reasonable price. I suppose, in Moscow there are some shops of Vologda lace too, but they are exclusive and expensive.

Sorry for eye opening...

Oh naive can be beautiful too. I did not mean that it wasn't.
I look forward to visiting Russia soon. Lace probably isn't anywhere close to the top of the list of my main interests though.

Let's hope you get there. It's a country of thousands of surprises and infinite interest. There is a special sort of western people - "Russia-addicted", especially among Germans (German-Russian romance is a very special historic saga). They get excited of eternal unpredictibility of Russian life and don't want to think about returning to "our german refrigerator", as one of them said. Very thrilling could it be, indeed.

I hope you'll have a good local frend who can guide you. Because real beauty begins when you step aside from touristic routes.

Very, very lovely. I tried something like this once - but not as fine or well done - can't imagine how much time this took! Wonderful.

Yes, I was told it was quite time consuming to make these.

I have no idea how anyone can have enough patience to make such things.
