Fundamentalists, racists, violent religious fanatics and organic farming

A couple of our hipster volunteers are looking to spend some time at an organic sustainable agriculture mountain farm in the neighbouring Romania after our project. It turns out many of these remote farms have something like this as part of their requirements for volunteers:

"We do not accept fundamentalists, rasist or violent behaviored, relegiosly fanatic people." [sic]

It seems that Romania's remote mountain farms have become popular with violent fundamentalists and racist religious fanatics lately, which is unfortunate. However, a serious increase in interest in sustainable organic farming among these guys might be a good sign. I think that there is a bit more hope for a violent racist religious fundamentalist with a passion for composting and herbal tinctures than there is for just a violent racist religious fundamentalist.

But of course, because the racist fundamentalist terrorist cares about the planet and preserving all life.  While they're plotting the next suicide bombing they can spend time in the mountains doing things to help the planet. Ha!  The Irony.

I always say, violent racists and/or religious fundamentalists/fanatics have nothing to do just with Islam, it's evident in every religion & race on this planet.
Only the amount differs from regions & eras.

Very sad, that almost no country is without terrorism these days.

I have to confess that the first mental picture I got was someone with a lot of violets in their beard, you know, like hipsters on Instagram often do.

Actually in Romania and here in Moldova when they say "religious fanatics" 99 out of 100 cases they mean their own Christian folks not Muslims I think, like it would be in Western Europe these days. There are almost no Muslims here, especially in the country side.

I think they mean their own conservative Christian folks, suicide bombers haven't made it to remote villages of Transylvania yet I hope.

Ah ok Christian conservatives.  I suppose they can get scary with the bible thumping. 

That's good there haven't been any ISIS there.  They seem to strike everywhere else.

But you don't hear that in german, american, french TV... it's only on TV if it happens in West Eruope & USA, and if the Terrorists are muslims... they're basically saying "Fuck Romania, Moldova, Turkey, etc..." as soon as it doesn't fit in their scheme.

They found out about a Serial Killer in Germany this year, but it was only once or twice on TV and then it was all like, oh well, he was maybe mentally ill.
Or the Nazis/Skinheads, which are in prison for killing and bombing Turks, Greeks & Arabs in Germany over a course of 10 years... you almost never see tv coverage on that story. :(

Since I have never had a TV (I also grew up in a house without one), I don't really have a good feeling about how biased or not it is. I am also keeping up with the news via press and internet less and less every year.

In Romania and Moldova "religious fanatic" usually doesn't mean violence or terrorist attacks. From what I have seen, they are mostly just annoying here, volunteering their views when nobody asked for them, shaming people as "godless", etc. Moldovans are a very non-violent bunch.

Yes, I think there would be very little benefit for ISIS or any other terrorist group in blowing up a barn in a Transylvanian village of 300 peasants. Their Christian conservatives are not really scary but can be annoying from what I have seen.

Yes, in Romania a lot these days. In Moldova too, locals are actually not that much into volunteering here, it is a relatively new thing for them. We get more applications from abroad than we do from within.

In Romania, not only there a lot of foreigners among the volunteers but about 25 to 30 percent of the hosts are foreigners who moved to Transylvania and started their farms / yoga retreats / etc there. There are Germans of course (Transylvania used to be very German), Brits, Swedes, a lot of Dutch, some Belgians, Hungarians of course, some are mixed families. This is not the case for Moldova though, very few foreigners move to live here, we know only one mixed American - Moldovan family who moved and started an organic farm here.

I remember a few years ago I was in New Orleans drinking a hurricane walking down Bourbon street and one of them Christian fundamentalists stopped me to pray and give me a little pamplet about Jesus.  He had a sign I think he was trying to convert drunk sinners I don't know.  I don't think he was having much luck.  He seemed like a nice fellow though Jesus peddling aside.  Of course once I've had a few rum filled hurricanes everyone is nice.

Orthodox folks here do not try to preach or convert anyone, this is not what they do traditionally. They get annoying when they try to fight what they see as a "threat of Western culture and globalisation" to them, etc. Things like gay pride parade, etc might set them off. This is from what I have seen, I might be wrong, I did not research or try to understand this.

Ah I see.  So they keep to themselves until something arises that is against their morality then get all up in the thing.  

By "all up in the thing" I mean they get to protesting it. 

I don't really study any of it either.  I'm far too busy. 

I only mentioned the New Orleans moment I had as a pleasant memory.  It was on a night in July of 2014.  An extremely hot summer there.  Just one of many pleasant moments I had there.  I was staying in the Hotel St Marie on Toulouse st that time.  Across from the Olivier House another Hotel I have stayed in.  Now I book Wyndham ' s as I get employee discounts.
