Then I drove 15 minutes north (and up) to one of the neighbouring villages and the scenery changed to this:

How beautiful! I love it when you get frost forming that effect on trees, freezing mist, is it? It's stunning.

Yes, it is freezing mist. All trees are like that there and it looks stunning. Some of our volunteers drove there just to take pictures of themselves in front of those trees.
